X out of Y as Percentage to Grade?

“X out of Y as Percentage to Grade” means converting a raw score (X) out of a possible maximum score (Y) into a percentage and then assigning a corresponding letter grade based on a predefined grading scale.

Percentage=(X/Y​)×100

  • Example for a Test:
    • X: 42 (correct answers)
    • Y: 50 (total questions)
    • Percentage: (4250)×100=84%(5042​)×100=84%
    • Grade: ‘A’ (based on the grading scale)
  • Example for an Assignment:
    • X: 18 (points earned)
    • Y: 20 (maximum points)
    • Percentage: (1820)×100=90%(2018​)×100=90%
    • Grade: ‘A+’ (according to the grading scale)
  • Example for a Project:
    • X: 75 (overall project score)
    • Y: 100 (maximum project score)
    • Percentage: (75100)×100=75%(10075​)×100=75%
    • Grade: ‘C+’ (as per the grading scale)
  • Example for an Exam:
    • X: 28 (total marks obtained)
    • Y: 40 (total marks possible)
    • Percentage: (2840)×100=70%(4028​)×100=70%
    • Grade: ‘B’ (based on the predefined grading scale)
  • Example for a Quiz:
    • X: 15 (points scored)
    • Y: 18 (maximum points for the quiz)
    • Percentage: (1518)×100=83.33%(1815​)×100=83.33%
